TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FOOTBALL CLUB
HIRING ANGE POSTECOGLU
I had not heard of Ange before he was linked to Spurs, so being a Spurs fan since December 1987, I had to check him out. My research led me to conclude that Big Ange is the best manager that Spurs have hired in the EPL era, and I will explain why.
I did not post my opinion piece at the time he was hired because it made sense to review at least one season with Big Ange in charge, before doing so. And it was worth the wait!
Whether Ange will bring the success that we so crave at the club remains to be seen, but let me state why I reckon he is the best to date.
Firstly, Big Ange has a playing philosophy and on pitch style that will resonate with the Spurs faithful. He prefers attacking football over defensive football, which is a must for Spurs fans.
Secondly, Big Ange loves to work with young players, if as he says, he considers them good enough. Sadly, I believe Ange had opportunities to breed in some youth into his team in the 2022/23 season, particularly with the loss of Harry Kane on the eve of the season opener and the subsequent injuries he experienced during his debut season. Notwithstanding, that love for youth, shown in the introduction of players like Brennan Johnson, will hold Big Ange in good stead and align him more closely with the ethos of the current club leader aka Daniel Levy.
Thirdly, Big Ange is a natural dealing with the press, which is an integral part of the role of a Premier League football club manager. Being good or great with the media can buy a manager time in the job and good press conferences can lead to accolades such as Manager of the Month awards, of which Big Ange won consecutively in his first three consecutive month in the job, where he went unbeaten.
Fourthly, Big Ange does not necessarily wish to buy hundred million players, which again, fits in with the ethos of the current ownership of the club. Levy being the astute businessman that he is, has always been savvy in the transfer market. Some say, too savvy for his own good, but he has shown a preference for buying young and under valued, add value then sell on. In as much as this strategy has evolved in recent years, with the reluctance for example to sell Harry Kane, the core of the team can be seen to be relatively young players whose value should increase over time. Adding that value has to be down to Big Ange and he will be partly judged on how well he does in this department.
It is worth noting that Levy may have outgrown this strategy with the development of the new stadium and the multiple revenue sources it affords Spurs. This seeming deviation does not mean that Levy is still looking to sell on his key assets, but having a manager who prefers youth over experience, the latter being represented by managers like Conte, makes Ange a better suited manager for Spurs than say, Conte or Mourinho.
So, in conclusion, being the best manager hired does not mean that he will go on to have the most sustainable success at Spurs, (even though that is my personal expectation) but it definitely means that Big Ange is positioned to do so, better than all those who have come before him at Spurs in the EPL era.
His fit for the club given where the club is today - starving for trophies - is what makes Ange the best EPL manager hired by Spurs to date. Other managers such as Harry Redknapp and Poch, may have been primed to have greater success based on their own managerial abilities, but without that seemingly natural across-board alignment with the club ethos, stood no chance of real success over the long-term, particularly as one would assume some to be more at loggerheads with Levy during their tenure.
Being the best stems from the natural alignment, and Big Ange has shown, in the short time at the club, that he is truly aligned with the power-that-be in the club aka Chairman Daniel Levy. He finished 5th in his first season, bringing Europa football back to the club.
The preparation for the 2024/25 season has confirmed my position, given the manner in which Levy has backed Big Ange in the transfer market, to date. Indeed, Big Ange is the man for the Spurs job ... our very own Sir Alex Ferguson ... our very own Arsene Wenger ... our very own Pep Guardiola.
